What Colors For the Baby’s Nursery?
By Doreen Richmond
The dainty pinks and sky blues may be good for the parents, reminding them to move and be gentle when within the realms of their new born baby. However, babies are not yet equipped to recognize such refinement in color. It is not until after approximately their third month, when all three types of cones in the retina are fully developed, that the child recognizes that colors such as blue, yellow, red and even mixed colors like pink and brown belong to different color categories.
Modern scientific studies have show that babies, and even small children, however, lack the psychological sensitivity for understanding delicate and intricate shades of color. It is not until they reach their very early teens, that they react to the more refined hues in the same way that adults do.
Even though small babies do have a limited color experience, by the time they are three months old they do have their favorite colors and color dislikes. Psychological studies have clearly shown that most babies, beginning at this age, love strong violets, purples, reds, oranges and blues. Colors that do not necessarily appeal to them are green and yellow. And they are not very impressed by the browns for which many have a clear dislike. Since the baby’s reaction to color stimulation is not as extreme as that of the adult, they do require brighter, contrasting colors.
So instead of a delicate pink or blue for the nursery room, strong lively colors will appeal much more to the baby, at least as soon as it is three months old. A violet blue or bright blue could be excellent for walls. On the one hand, they reflect a sense of composure, on the other, they are excellent for giving perk to the warmer colors. Oranges, purples, pinks and reds look very alluring set against the various blue backgrounds. Tiny children are particularly attracted to purples and violets. Softer shades of this hue can be most enchanting for the walls. Turquoise blue, bright pinks, oranges and orange reds will joyfully scintillate against such a background as colorful accents for textiles and toys.
